Pure Vision Design, in Simi Valley, California, is approximately half-way through the build of a 1972 Plymouth Scamp, and we’ve been following its progress. The complete drivetrain is installed and the crew at Pure Vision is now in the process of reassembling the car.

The inspiration for this build came from the mind of Pure Vision Design founder Steve Strope and was first presented in the June 2019 issue of HOT ROD in our Sketchpad Supercars feature. Steve worked with automotive illustrator Eric Brockmeyer to come up with an interesting take on a Plymouth’s economical A-body.

The Scamp is an interesting car in its own right. Technically a variant of the Plymouth Valiant, it’s basically a Dodge Dart Swinger with Valiant hood, fenders, and grille. To that mix, Steve added a lot of subtle styling elements, including an Air Grabber hood scoop and Bumblebee Stripe, gave it a significant drop in ride height, and that’s how it ran in the Sketchpad issue. Once the magazine hit the newsstands, Steve’s friend, Bob Florine liked the illustration so much, he had to have one.

After a nationwide search, Bob found an exceptionally clean and totally stock ’72 Scamp in Minnesota. He bought it sight unseen and had it shipped to California in April 2019.

The car was unbelievably clean. The undercarriage was just as nice as the engine compartment, and the Slant-Six purred like a kitten.

The interior looked as good as new. It’s obvious the previous owner took exceptional care of the car.

Since then, Steve and his crew at Pure Vision have steadily been transforming the car to match the illustration. The car was completely disassembled, and the body was sent to be media blasted. Once back, they tackled some minor metalwork to fix previous repairs and a few spots of rust damage.

On one of our trips to visit the shop, Steve showed us an idea he was toying with for a rear spoiler for the car.

A fresh 340 replaces the car’s stock Slant-Six, and the paint job on the engine is nicer than we’ve seen on many cars. Bob requested fuel injection, so the guys installed Holley’s Sniper Stealth EFI system on an Edelbrock Intake. TTi provided the headers, and the Vintage Air A/C system will keep interior temperatures in check on long road trips.

The leaf springs were moved inboard to accommodate wheel tubs for wider tires and a 9-inch rear axle replaces the stock one. The EFI ready Rick’s Tanks fuel tank will be powdercoated black for a more subtle look. A Gear Vendors overdrive hangs off the back of the 727 automatic.
UP NEXT
The interior is in the process of being thoroughly covered in Dynamat sound and heat insulation. Once completed, the interior will be installed and the car will be nearly finished. We’ll keep the updates coming as work progresses.
